Interior view of the diabetic ward. Verso: A full despite diabetes World Health Day 7 April 1971. World Health Day marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) on 7 April 1948. The theme has been chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Robert Daniel Lawrence was the first to demonstrate that diabetics can live as long, as well and as busily as anybody. Lawrence was a doctor. He died two years ago at 76, which means that he lived some 8 years longer than the average British male. He lasted half century after his diabetes had been diagnosed and the discovery of his illness wa made a couple years before Banting and Best discovered insulin. The discovery and isolation of insulin by F.Banting and C.Best in Toronto in 1921 come none too soon for young Doctor Lawrence, for at that time he had already resigned himself to an early death. But instead, following the great Canadian achievement, he was able to fill a long life with a record of accopmlishments most men would envy. "Dr R.D. Lawrence" diabetic ward at King's Hospital, London, where he used to work.
