A physician is examining an old man. Verso: A full life despite diabetes. World Health Day. 7 April 1971. World Health Day marks the anniversary of the coming into force of the Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) on 7 April 1948. The theme has been chosen to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Despite modern discoveries, and that of insulin in particular, diabetes appears to be in the increase, and there are many undetected causes, particularly amongst men and women above the age of forty, who are overweight. This knowledge has led many public health authorities to try to detect such causes by organizing community screening surveys, using blood or urine tests. Once the disease has been diagnosed, the appropriate form of treatment is prescribed. It is now possible for the diabetic paitent to live a normal working life, to bear children, to play games and, in brief to enjoy life to the full. A rational diet constitutes an adequate treatment in the numerous causes of benign diabetes found especially among old people. In moderately or very serious cases the disturbances in metabolism compensated for by combination of dieting and medication. Obviously, certain precautions must be taken. The most important is that the treatment and dietary regime prescibed by the doctor are carfully followed. Diabetic patients must also subject themselves to a periodical medical check-up.
