Note (General):

Picture caption: The one million volt X-ray machine is being used at Walter Reed General Hospital in the treatment of patients suffering with cancer. Its rays are identical to those obtained from a 1,000 or 200,000 volt machine, but its power of penetration is greater. It is, therefore, never used for skin cancers or those close to the surface of the skin. The machine can be raised, lowered, or twisted at an angle. The patient is treated in a room with 18 inch thick walls of concrete, a lead door an inch thick weighing 3000 pounds and a peephole for the doctor made with a six inch aquarium with walls of five panes of leaded glass. The machine has as many controls as the engine room of a battleship. The hospital has a Tumor Board composed of specialists which reviewed all new cases of cancer, and in consultation decides on the method of treatment, the type of operation, the use of radium, X-ray, or any two or all of them.
