Image Description:
Subject: A political satire of the defeat of a project for fortifying the coast of England. The print alludes to an altercation between the Duke of Richmond and the Marquis of Lansdowne. The marquis is shown in act of cramming physic (i.e. the letter "F" on a spoon) down the mouth of the seated duke. Next to them is a table on which sits a plate of letter blocks spelling "Fortification" (minus the "F" on the spoon). A map of Cherbourg hangs on the wall behind them. Two other figures of the day, one blind and groping along a wall, are shown in the background.
