Image Description:
Subject: The painting shows a single serpent in purple, blue, and black encircling a tree branch. The sun backs the serpent's head and the rest of the scene is against a deep blue sky. A dark grassy area and two trees are in the background.
Note (General):
One of a series of twelve paintings "after the manner of" twelve artists. The posters are part of what is referred to by the accompanying literature as a "caduceus" series by Roussel Laboratories in France. The images really represent the staff of Aesculapius (one serpent encircling the staff) as opposed to a caduceus (two serpents encircling the staff, coming from opposite directions). The posters have numbers on the back ranging from 147 to 158, this being no. 147.
